Mission is-possible!!

Matt 5:14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Last week, 7 of us from the YAds team, Revival Centre went to Kampong Speu, Cambodia for a mission-trip. It is a rural village area about 1 1/2 hours out of Phnom Penh. I was both an eye-opener as well as an amazing miracle for me. We had many series of activities with classes for children and youth, and even conducting church service for their local church.

We stayed in a small guest house out in the main road of Kampong Speu where there is water and electricity supply. I guess us stupid pampered city folks won't survive without electricity & water-supply I suppose?? But we didnt try, and there were no guest houses inside the villages anyway. The main road area has electricity but it was out one of the nights we were there.
Anyway, guess what I saw outside our guesthouse everyday??
pergi jauh-jauh oso nampak Abbott trucks hahaha

The trip was eye-opening because:

1. In some of the villages, there is no water or electricity supply... they use kerosene lamps and waters from the well. They are very simple people but very appreciative of life.
Now THIS, is a real kampong... unlike Kampung Pandan or Kampung Baru

2. Some of the people are so poor there, a lot malnutrition happens. You can see small little kids who have pale blondish hair, whom did not achieve that look by dying their hair... it's lack of nutrients. Meat is also a luxury, when you order beef noodle, you will get noodles & cow spare parts. When you order nasi goreng ayam, you will get nasi goreng tulang-ayam. But I must say, they cook well... the taste is not bad at all.

3. Small small kids are super duper independent. As young as 6 would walk or cycle >10km by themselves to class. There was one kid in one of our class who had to carry her baby sister to class, babysitting I suppose... she herself could not be more than 6yrs old!!! Yet, they are still so appreciative and thankful for everything they have or get.

4. Many people do not get education because of the need to come out and work to support their family. Also, their education system is pretty corrupted causing their value of their degree to be next to nothing, unrcognized degrees, unrecognized universities... unfair for those who truly studied and worked hard to obtain their degrees. Sad. We had communication breakdowns whenever our interpreter was not with us, our request for cut chillies came out as a plate of sliced pork =.="

5. Pastor Kala (our contact there) answered God's calling 6 years ago to come here as a fulltime missionary... all alone!! She gave up all the comforts of Malaysia to be there to start teaching & do many community projects. Thanks to her, many of the youths in her classes can speak English, do simple Math & budgeting, know about caring for their health, and much much more! You can straightaway see the difference between those whose lives were touched by the missionaries and those whose lives were not. Hats off and total respect & admiration to Pastor Kala's selflessness and sacrifice. We visiting missionaries may be there to teach for a few days, a few weeks or even a few months... but it is her commitment and dedication that keeps all the programs running continuously, developing the people in Kampong Speu.
The church in Kandaldom

The trip was an amazing miracle because:

1. The water supply was unclean & Pastor Kala & our Cambodian interpreter, Vuthy warned us not to consume ice for fear of typhoid and cholera. But because it was the hottest season there right now!! (That's why not many visiting missionaries this season) We all cannot tahan the heat & thus, did not comply. Thanks for all our home-church people praying for us, we were protected. None of us got sick at all!! And we ate all the food just off the street-stalls and definitely had lotsa ice. hehehe
Matahari super terik gila!! Hot and dusty!

2. Many ad-hoc requests came up for session we did not plan. I had to conduct a vocal / music lesson completely impromptu!! Eeeeeeks!!! Takutnya. Yes, I know I can sing and play piano or whatever, but I am a lousy teacher. A really lousy one. But the feedback for my class was so positive. I even conducted an altar-call, me, erm... not exactly Miss examplary-Christian, conducting an altar call?? Erm... weird but people responded. Phew!! Just commit to what God ask you to do and He will give you the strength, skills and everything to do it well!! I know I should't have been afraid but hey, I am human too k?
Teacher Yee Huey... kekekeke ;-) (photo courtesy of Li Chan)
3. Testimonies from the locals... how this cute teenager was almost dead from dengue who was saved eventually, how someone was protected from dangerous accidents, etc etc. These super simple people with so many un-met needs... actually feel THANKFUL. So, Malaysians, if we are complaining, shame on us! We have so much more!

All in all, it was a wonderful trip... it was even wayyy way better than my first trip to Cambodia which was for touring purpose only. I think I gained a lot more from a giving-trip than a receiving-trip. Praise the Lord!! I can't stop sharing about my experience since the day I got back... starting with my parents as they picked me up from LCCT. hehehe. Would I go back there again to teach? Absolutely! ^_^
Shout with Joy to the Lord, all the earth!

Mission: Accomplished!

Last Saturday, for the very first time I was leading a mission trip! :) Was pretty worried that things would be chaotic coz I was so busy with work I didnt have much time to plan or even delegate properly in the journey of getting the workshop going. But thanks to a wonderful wonderful team of people, things turned out well. Phew! Praise the Lord!! :) :) Guess in Him anything is possible even if you are juggling one thousand million things that seem to be too overwhelming.

We had a creative arts and music workshop to help these kids find an avenue to express themselve artistically since they never have the chance to do so in their normal school classes. The essentials are the only thing the teachers can cramp into their limited syllabus due to lack of teachers, time and resources.

Praise and worship led by Iggy.

I hope our presence gave them that opportunity and will spark them to continue to develop those hidden talents.I hope our presence gave them that opportunity and will spark them to continue to develop those hidden talents.

Looking forward to make a difference in more people's lives in the near future! When you have God's love, spread it! :)

Community Service @Lifespring

This post is totally overdued... but nevertheless deserves space on this blog still. :) A few weeks ago, the Young Adults Ministry at my church, Revival Centre, did a community service program at Lifespring Orphanage at Balakang. We decided to do a paint job for them as one of the rooms there was burnt and in dire need of repair. We wanted to do something that had a lasting effect and not just a touch 'n go kind of visit.

A lot of people make the mistake of doing social activities with orphanages just once off and end up hurting the kids even more when they leave. These kids are deprived of a real family and clings to whoever shows them love and care with all their might. If someone visits the orphanage once off bearing toys and socialize with them, they will feel the sense of abandonment when these people leave. If a volunteer wants to build a relationship with these kids, it has to be a long term, permanent arrangement. Like twice-weekly tuition classes...etc.

Since most of us could not commit our time in the long term, we thought a building revamp would leave behind something more meaningful. :)

It was a wonderful day for both the givers and the receivers. It was amazing how much provision could fit into one of our church member's small Viva... hehehe. God is great and so is His love!!!

Thank God for a family

Last nite was our first homegroup meeting after a long 6-week break. I didn't really feel much like going after feeling unappreciated at work. But I was on duty to share the Word, so obediently I went. What a blessing that I went!!

I was sharing on "Don't just live saved, live blessed!" But I wasn't at all feeling blessed at the moment. The words came out of my mouth mechanically as it wasn't from my heart.

Then we got into small groups to share and I shared about my stagnating situation at work which was really depressing me out. Andy and Flo also shared their similar experiences in their work. And how when God closes one door, he opens another door... in fact, a bigger and better one! He puts us through all the downsides of our lives for reason beyond our understanding. We are like ants walking on a piece of paper, we can't see what is on the paper but He sees the big picture. Someday, He will lift us up to see what is on the paper and we will undertand it all.

They prayed for me... somehow, I was more than comforted to know that I should never give up. With God on our side, who can be against us?

Flora and me!

Andy is d big guy with a big heart!

Thanks for being my friends guys!! Now, I feel so blessed... having you guys in my family of God! I love you guys!!!

Happy birthday to me!

So, am 1 year older... one year closer to the big 30. I don't mind growing older chronologically, bcoz you are only as old as you feel. But hhhmm, it does make you reflect upon your life.

Yesterday was more eventful and blog-worthy. My homegroup gang went house to house, pai lin. They even came halfway across the world to my house! And they celebrated my birthday! :)
We started out in Andy's house where we were completely stuffed with food!! He has always been the most generous person in d group.

At Andy's place

An abundance of food!

Yum yum!

Our generous host, da big guy with da big heart!

Andy's Puppies!!!!

In the afternoon, we went to Yuet Ngoh and my place.

At night we went over to Eric and Selan's place for some more food.

Steamboat! How was it?

Our gracious host says "good!!"

Then it was birthday celebrations for Eric and me. They bought us chocolate brownies! Yum yum!!

Today itself was nothing much though...
- I am back to work today with lots to do.
- bf's not around.
- my family is having a steamboat dinner gathering... but the occasion is CNY.

Thankfully,
- my bestfriend came all the way to see me and pass me my birthday present! A very pretty one too.
- my boss and colleague bought me lunch.
- was gonna send my laptop which went dead on me few days ago for fixing when it suddenly came back to life!
- Ps Ronnie and Ps Lisa sent me a lovely card this year for d first time!

Only about 1 hour left of my birthday... I'm very thankful to have so many wonderful caring friends and family around me this time of the year. I'm not sensitive about age and have never been worried about growing older but birthdays do make you think alot about your life...
what have I achieved in life so far???
has my personal life progressed???
has my career progressed???
has my spiritual life progressed???
have I progressed at all since my last birthday???
where do I go from here???
as Carrie Underwood would sing... Jesus, Take The Wheel!!

Life Overflowing

Just got back from a pre-Valentine's Day dinner with bf. We celebrated in advance as he is working tomorrow nite for the V Day theme classes.

Remember our little moment of glamour at the recording studio?

Well, the fruit of our labour is out!!

the Life Overflowing CD

And over-ripe already actually. It was out since Christmas but I keep forgetting to publicize it. The CD is actually produced by one of our church members, Susan Yuen but a few of us were featured in the CD as guest singers... and we guests were pretty good I must say!! Ahem! Get a copy and you can be the judge. You can get all Simon Cowell-esque on us ;)

All the songs in there are original compositions.

da songlist

"I shall sing" is my proud solo!! "You are my rock" is bf's solo!

If anyone is interested to purchase it, please do let me know. It's only RM35 and all the proceeds go to the needy and the poor. If anyone just wants to preview what the songs sound like, please do let me know and I'll be happy to lend you my copy!

I'll be home for Christmas

Er, I know Christmas and New Year are both long gone and basi. But I just got back from Perth last night and I haven't had the time to blog much lately. I felt that the I'll Be Home For Christmas event went so well that I'd like to share it with my blog readers. The Christmas presentation went well too but since bf has already blogged it, I shall not be redundant.
As Wai Ling said, every single one of us in the Ampang Jaya Home Group were hosts on that day. Some of us cooked, some of us were involved in the presentation, some of us doing the games etc. With my cooking skills, I was in charge of making the salad saje. Itupun I bought the wrong type of dressing. Thankfully, Wai Ling had spare dressing in her fridge! :-)

Setting up the table before the event
Guests started arriving
Da games!! Facilitated by... who else but moi!
I asked for a Christmas tree not the word "Christmas Tree"... Duh
The dinner... food food and...
... more food!
Then there was the Christmas Presentation! With a candle-light drama and singing.
The narrators Shum and Joyce
Starring: candles!!!
My guests...
Doc and his happy family!
Me boss in pinkish striped top... so glad to spend time with her out of work!
Me bestfriend... eh? She's not a guest, she a host!
Everyone had a great time there and we're glad all the guests could make it to the event. It's always a pleasure for the hosts when they see that their hard work is appreciated and their guests have a good time of sharing. We were super glad that they came to listen to the reason we celebrate Christmas, to listen to the real Christmas story. No Santa, no reindeer and of course no snow la, this is Malaysia.
Happy Birthday Jesus!! We love You!!

Best new artist goes to...

During the 2nd day of Raya, we did not do any ziarah-menziarahi. Only did on the 1st day of Raya.

We did something else instead... decided to flex our vocal muscles instead of our other muscles at the gym.

Karaoke? Nope

My singing partner in crime since high school, Zwui

Just where were we headed?

DJW recording studio!!

DJW

Actually, we were not recording an album for ourselves. A lady from our church was recording an album and she picked us to sing in her album. Some solo parts here and there, and also back-up vocals. She spotted our talent during our wonderful Christmas presentation last year... and also all 3 of us are serving in the music/worship ministry at church... so, memang like it or not, she always nampak kita bertiga bernyanyi-nyanyi la.

I shall sing!

Alvin... lead singer of the chipmunks... where art thou Simon and Theodore?

There he is! Simon came to join us later.

Theodore? No la, he couldn't make it. It's Zwui!

D 4 of us learning up our parts

We had quite many songs to record; sometimes as the soloist, sometimes as the back-up vocals for each other, sometime in parts, some "oooos and aaaahhs", the usual stuff. We were there since morning we of course we took a break for lunch.

Right across the street was Canaan Church

What is there in Canaan Church?

Pastor Daniel and his wife, Karen.

They used to be in Revival Centre too and in the same homegroup as d 3 of us. He was also the one who led the music ministry so we were pretty close. We miss them a lot!! So lunch was a great opportunity to catch up with them.

After lunch, there was more work to do... we left there in the evening. Woooh... was very tiring but kinda fun. We'll be going back as there's still work left to do to complete the album. Will let you all know when it is out!!

We'll be stars! heehehe :-)
